When to do an intern and for how long?

Our lab generally recruits students who have spent at least a couple of months as an intern (some spend much more time and already have concrete projects and progress by the time they are admitted to grad school). From our experience, two months is the minimum amount of time needed for students to understand if the lab is a good fit for them; it also allows us to make recruiting decisions based on real experience rather than superficial records. For this reason, if you are interested in working with us, we recommend planning ahead of time so you can fit in an internship period before grad school application. Also, because of this nature of internships, we try to get internship students involved in research activity rather than let them be casual observers.

PhD vs MS?

We prioritize students who wish to work on their PhD degree at the SDKang Lab. Our members page has caused some misunderstanding because it might look like we mostly admit master students. We simply list students in their fist two years as master students; most of them are admitted as an integrated MS/PhD course student with the expectation that they have the intention to pursue a PhD degree. We generally do not have room for students who wish to complete only their master degree, although we have made exceptions now and then.

Research Area

We like to view research areas based on the fundamental knowledge needed, rather than application-specific knowledge. As a result, we encourage our members to (eventually) get involved in more than one application-specific research topic. Usually this means you have a common academic background that is connected to multiple application-specific research topics.

It is understandable that students develop interest based on application-specific topics. In addition to battery research (which most students show interest in), we also have projects that relate to next-generation semiconductor devices for neuromorphic computing, ion-exchange membranes, and corrosion monitoring (and its expansion to new corrosion environments).

When to contact

Please get in touch as soon as possible if you feel like our research and philosophy aligns with your interest. We do not always post official openings through the department channel, but in general we always have potential openings.

If you are interested in our research, please feel free to send your application directly to Prof. Kang (sdkangsnu.ac.kr). Apologies that we might not have the bandwidth to respond to all emails. We do save all such emails and then reach out whenever we have openings. If it’s been a while you contacted and did not hear back, it is OK to send follow up emails with any updates you might have (again, apologies for not being able to respond to all emails).
